Talon-5

Mechanical

Talon-5 is an in development 5in FPV quad based around a speedy bee f405 V4, 6S LIPO and 2207 1800kv BLDC motors. While most of the electrical system is off the shelf, the frame will be a custom carbon fiber design.

Frame

The frame consists of 8 custom carbon fiber parts, 2 pairs of arms, a central floating keystone between the arms to redistribute loads during a crash, the upper and lower base plate, forming a split deck design and the top plate. The goal is to create a durable platform to both learn how to design stiff and light frames while maintaining high impact strength. Especially since I will be crashing it, I'm still learning how to fly fpv drones.

Modal Analysis

The first flight test showed one critical issue with the prototype frame, a very strong vibration in the pitch axis. While I could have just swapped to carbon fiber and called it a day, I decided to determine exactly what the issue was and fix it. The simulation I did determined the first 5 natural frequencies and their corresponding mode shapes. Shown to the right was the first of the 5 mode shapes with the lowest natural frequency (98hz) which lands below the cutoff of the flight controller's filters, and would cause the exact issue I experienced. I used these results to update the frame design, move some standoffs and increase to natural frequency to 776hz, well above the frequencies the flight controller uses for flight.
